about flag 01

Cleveland was founded during a 1796 expedition into America's unexplored Western Reserve territory. The city, located on the southern shore of Lake Erie, has a strong history of industrial, naval and recreational maritime activity. As such, the eight-point star/directional compass features heavily in relevant symbolism.

The colors for this Cleveland flag design are borrowed from the Cleveland, Ohio, and American flags, but the shapes and symbols are new.

The blue field represents the waters of Lake Erie and the Cuyahoga River. The red field represents the Cleveland's vibrant future as a comeback city.

The blue half circle represents the city's communities and their connection to the waterways and natural resources that have fueled Cleveland's economy and recreational activities for more than two centuries. The white half circle represents the environmental water cycle, the changing of seasons and the turning of the tide as Cleveland transitions to a new era of progress and prosperity. The white star represents hope and direction. It is a reminder that Cleveland is on the right path.

This Cleveland flag redesign is built on a 1:4 grid. See how this Cleveland flag stacks up against other Ohio city flags.
